The CL manual only makes brief mention of the difference when allocating a DDM file (include extra WAIT time for the other system to respond) and there is also a small blurb in the Distributed Data Management guide that explains that an ALCOBJ on the local system applies the equivalent lock on the remote system as well. After trying it out, I discovered that issuing the ALCOBJ command will dial the phone for dial-up connections. This behaviour of ALCOBJ may be useful in other scenarios where we want a CL program to begin the communications process before an HLL program gets to it. Thanks for pointing this out - I've learnt something new!
