Why is that - is it some dirty word in a non-English language?

We have a Polish fellow working with us.  When he first came over, his use 
of abbreviations for some common business phrases was - to say the least - 
very interesting.  Suffice it to say that we didn't let office girls watch 
over his shoulder while he coding RPG.
