John, it sounds as though you're using a character variable
on the CALLB statement.  CALLB requires a character constant
or a procedure pointer.

No, CALLB will work ok.  But since you seem to be just
starting out with RPG IV, you might as well skip the
out-moded CALLB and *ENTRY PLIST and start straight off
with prototyped calls and entry-parameter lists.
