>> My understanding is there is one continuous buffer There is, but remember we are talking RPG here and not, for example, COBOL. That means that the buffer is "unloaded" into the individual fields which may be anywhere in storage depending on whether they are defined in other files/formats etc. The only way to guarantee that they are in contiguous storage is to define the display format as an externally described DS. A DS is the only thing (other than a stand-alone array) that RPG guarantees will be in contiguous storage. +--- | This is the RPG/400 Mailing List! | To submit a new message, send your mail to RPG400-L@midrange.com. | To subscribe to this list send email to RPG400-L-SUB@midrange.com. | To unsubscribe from this list send email to RPG400-L-UNSUB@midrange.com. | Questions should be directed to the list owner/operator: david@midrange.com +---
