Yes, the UK contract market is extremely depressed at the moment. Jobs are
few and far between and rates are low. That's the reason I'm currently
working in France. Following a successful project my contract ends on Friday
and there is nothing at all on the horizon. I'm also planning to use any
slack time to develop new skills, particularly Java.

I've also heard that a general Y2K development freeze is the main cause, and
all these years I've been predicting that the last months of 1999 would be
boom time for contractors. :-(

I have found it similar here in the UK. I spent 6 weeks out of work before
I found my current contract which is over 300 miles from home and is paying
a much lower rate than my last. I get the feeling that everyone is putting
off new work until next year and at the moment, I am hanging on hoping the
market will improve about February next year. I am also using this time to
get further into ILE and Java.
