Strikes me as the sort of thing that belongs in a library function
(which could be implemented as a service program):

       eval mycell = GetCell("/test.xls":"r1c1")

IMHO, a BIF should reflect a need that a *large* proportion of RPG
programmers will have. BIFs for every conceivabe esoteric application
     don't seem workable to me.

     Just my EUR 0.02.

        >> I know it's not realy the way you want to do it, but just a
thought.

Right, It's not what I want. There's a lot of ways to fudge it.
I want the RPGIV language to actively participate in the IFS
world directly. Every new product (Application) that is comming
to the AS/400 will be in the IFS. RPGIV needs to address that
        fact.

In VA/RPG we have DDE direct link to active spread sheets.
I would like some "Native" ability to update a Stream File
in the IFS. I can personally get along with out having
yet another native DB2/400 chain opcode

What I would like is "New" built-in functions like
        %GETCELL and %SETCELL etc.

What "New" and exotic functions would you all like??
