I had this work on an Insert into a table but not on an Update. Follow this:

CREATE TABLE ROB/DTTEST (MYFIELD CHAR (10), THEDATE TIMESTAMP NOT
NULL WITH DEFAULT)
CREATE VIEW ROB/DTTEST2 (MYFIELD) AS SELECT MYFIELD FROM ROB/DTTEST
INSERT INTO ROB/DTTEST2 VALUES('Hi ya')
select * from rob/dttest
        MYFIELD THEDATE
        Hi ya 1999-08-23-11.41.38.402920
UPDATE ROB/DTTEST2 SET MYFIELD = 'putz'
select * from rob/dttest
        MYFIELD THEDATE
        putz 1999-08-23-11.41.38.402920

Therefore I recommend the trigger.
