My wife worked just enough to put us in another tax bracket.

I hate income taxes, but it is 1% or effectively, nothing. But it does give
them something to use in next year's election to say "The President vetoed
this".
If you want to cut taxes, CUT them!  Drop everybody to, say 15 percent don't
do a half-hearted political move.  The partial free/fixed option is just
that, a half hearted attempt to provide something that some people will
think is beneficial to them. But, like the 1% tax cut, it will have either
no benefit, or it will screw things up. I think.
