the standards committee disbanded...and it lacked the marketing that JAVA has had of late...and the implementation on the midrange (S/38 and 400) was a small subset of the mainframe language and it really kinda sucked at times... But it's still available on the PC platforms...and in some areas going great guns...and it's still very popular on the mainframes... PL/I was the BEST of FORTRAN and COBOL with really nice string functionality for its time...
