Bill,

The only solution I have found in this case is to use SQL. You will have to
code an SQLDA in this case because the compiler won't let you select into
a single large field. You also have to allocate space for the null indicator.

I have an application that uses a "program described" file. However,
whenever I OVRDBF to a file that has null data, I receive "data mapping
errors", specifically for "unexpected null value encountered".

According to both the IBM RPG and RPG IV manuals, accessing null-capable
files with "program-described" files will always result in data mapping
errors. Does anyone know of any way around this restriction? I can't use
an "externally-described" file for this application because of record name
problems, even if LVLCHK(*NO) is specified.

Is anyone at IBM listening? I'd really like to see this changed in a
release or fixed via a PTF. Thanks in advance for your comments and
suggestions,
