If I recall correctly, when a MS executive first suggested giving away Internet
Explorer for free, Mr Gates muttered "communist" <g>

This is a capitalist, free market society. Giving something away works when
it's
nothing more than bait. Like a "free" PC as an advertising transport. Or a
toaster
to move your bank account. Frequent flyer miles. etc.

If I'm going to spend 3 years of my life writing some (IMNSHO, kick a** ) code,
how
do I afford to eat? I charge for it. And not only that, I charge what the
market
will bear. (the humbling experience that this may be) Unless you won the lotto,
I
don't think that when you are offered a pay check you say" "No thanks". =:-o

IBM/MS/et al have a lot of pay checks to sign. And AFAIK, none are being turned
down. The money -has- to come from somewhere. If not you, maybe your neighbor?
(and remember, they are thinking the same of you!)
