The standard in my company is to specify DEBUG(*YES) as we have DUMP in our error processing. From what your saying then, all the fields for every file will always be read in this case, which is my point. -----Original Message----- From: Douglas Handy [mailto:dhandy@isgroup.net] Sent: Monday, June 21, 1999 5:46 PM To: RPG400-L@midrange.com Subject: Re: RPG enhancement suggestion Colin, >There must be 1000's of RPG programs out there that use only very few >fields from files, but read in every field on the file every time a >record >is read Au contraire. The RPG compiler is smart enough to exclude unreferenced fields unless you specifically ask for them by including DEBUG(*YES) or the RPG III equivalent (col 15 = '1'). Have you ever noticed that when you run STRDBG on a program you can't necessarily display all the fields from an externally described file? If the field isn't referenced, no memory is allocated and no move operations are performed. And you can't see it under STRDBG. Unless you code DEBUG(*YES) or '1' in column 15 in RPG III.
