Carol, Probably I wasn't clear enough (and the IBM terminology in this area is rather confusing): all our database files are externally described (we do use Query and SQL), but in our RPG programs we use internal definitions. So we don't lose functionality; there are only a few things we can't do in RPG (like using KLISTs). And of course we have to change programs when we move, rename or change fields within a record definition (though rest assured we don't do that manually; we build our own tools).
