Your systems analyst colleague is correct -- you can only run the debugger
on a sucessfully compiled program. This would be true of most compiled
languages, I think.

The "old" debugger STRDBG is a non-interactive tool (but quite useful with
a few supporting tools). Try STRISDB instead if you want to see your source
as the program runs. (And your OS level is V3R1 or greater.)

STRISDB does not have an "animation" feature (automatically stepping
through the program every 5 sec or so), but you can do many other things
with it.  To single-step through your program press F5-Step.

Press the Help key once you get STRISDB showing the source of your program.
Lots of stuff in there, but it might take 5 or 10 minutes to work through it.
