David - I can't think of anything you haven't thought of. The future support may not help you either I suspect (and the future isn't V4R1 - or even R2) since the comment alludes to the fact that descriptors are only available for certain data types. Why do you not know the data type? You say that the called routine knows the type, so I'm a little confused as to why you can't simply code it in the PR.
