I have been using the ASUS RT-AC66R series router for a few years.
I just moved it to the basement recently and it reaches my office in the basement and all the rooms on 1st and 2nd floor.
It also has Open VPN built in if you need remote access to your network.
Microcenter and Frys and BBY all probably have the latest models of these for ~ $100.

I want to drop the Xfinity cable modem/wireless AP and use my own. Good on the cable modem side, but looking for a good AP that will reach to the second floor. I have an AP, but the signal is not very strong. Thanks!
