Yes, the Evault is it's own appliance and does it's own backups. Those
backups are stored locally on the appliance and also on the cloud. You can
do as many copies as you want. We're doing 8 dailys, 5 weeklys, and 12
monthlys. Has everything except a SAVSYS.

We still do tape saves 5 nights a week. Mon-Thu is everything except a
SAVSYS, Fri is everything including a SAVSYS. Friday's is also dupped and
stored in 2 offsite locations. The tape libraries are still installed,
though we haven't used them in a month or more. We have an internal tape
drive that we're using for those tape backups.

Ana often as we want (our choice) we send a SAVSYS tape to the offsite data
center where the Evault backups go. If we ever declare a disaster, they
stand up a system in their data center using that SAVSYS tape along with
the most recent Evault backups. If we need to reload our system here in
the office, we use the latest SAVSYS, followed by restoring the rest of
everything either from the latest tape or the onsite appliance.

Wasn't the evault something that used it's own backup commands? And not
something that emulates an IBM tape library? What do you do for a bare
metal recovery? Since you have no tape maintenance I assume you have no
tape libraries whatsoever. Therefore, no "well, we still have a SAVSYS on
physical tape". In the windows world they're quite used to recreating the
client or server from distro and restoring just the data from backup
solutions.

We went to an Evault solution for our System i through an IBM BP. Coupled
it with DR and were able to eliminate a couple of tape libraries (read
"maintenance" on those tape libraries) to help justify it. Seems to be
working well, though it's still new. The stand up test should come within
the next few weeks.

We also looked at an online backup solution for our Windows servers
through
that same BP and you're absolutely right about the price. Staggering. We
could completely duplicate all server hardware for the cost of about 4
months online storage. IOW the same expense as replacing all Windows
server hardware every 4 months. I thought the cost was a misprint. Words
escape me.

We use TSM (Tivoli Storage Manager) to backup clients and servers to

Then, some version gets sent off to tape. So, yes, we're still dealing
with multiple tape volumes. But it's only 2 or 3 per day. Not one per
server or some such thing.

We looked at some eVault like product. Filled out the sizing worksheets
and whatnot. Ended up totally gagging at the price. We were thinking
one
unit at each of two locations and one elsewhere. Went down in flames...

I know there's a number of people doing this. IDK if it's just once you
get to a certain size it really starts getting pricey. Or the two local
units, or what. My boss handled the details.

What do you folks use to backup your servers? We're using BackupExec (I
think) to LTO-3 tape (IBM TS3310 library). The boss is unhappy with
this because we create 40-50 backup tapes per week so tape expenses
(tapes and storage of tapes) are high. He wants to do something more
"modern". We *could* backup to the cloud or local SAN but what do we do
for archive purposes?

What solutions are you aware of?

If we replaced the 2 LTO-3 drives with 2 LTO-4 drives, would that do
anything for us? The issue is not so much "speed" as it is "volume".

Any suggestions are welcomed.
