We went to an Evault solution for our System i through an IBM BP. Coupled
it with DR and were able to eliminate a couple of tape libraries (read
"maintenance" on those tape libraries) to help justify it. Seems to be
working well, though it's still new. The stand up test should come within
the next few weeks.

We also looked at an online backup solution for our Windows servers through
that same BP and you're absolutely right about the price. Staggering. We
could completely duplicate all server hardware for the cost of about 4
months online storage. IOW the same expense as replacing all Windows
server hardware every 4 months. I thought the cost was a misprint. Words
escape me.

What do you folks use to backup your servers? We're using BackupExec (I
think) to LTO-3 tape (IBM TS3310 library). The boss is unhappy with
this because we create 40-50 backup tapes per week so tape expenses
(tapes and storage of tapes) are high. He wants to do something more
"modern". We *could* backup to the cloud or local SAN but what do we do
for archive purposes?

What solutions are you aware of?

If we replaced the 2 LTO-3 drives with 2 LTO-4 drives, would that do
anything for us? The issue is not so much "speed" as it is "volume".

Any suggestions are welcomed.
