I haven't followed laptops recently. What do some of you who have made
fairly recent purchases recommend?
Mac - nothing else I've ever used comes close.

Has all of the basic stuff you need built in. Runs Windows better than most PCs. Just all round better engineered. Plus the 90 days of on-line support from people who a) Speak english b) Know what they are talking about or are willing and able to transfer you when their knowledge is exhausted c) Actually give you a real phone number and answer when you call back ... I've been so impressed by that service when I've needed it that I take the 3 year extension on my Macs.

In a similar vein, while I don't use Macs I prefer higher end machines and to that end I like to go to a gaming company to get my laptops. Sager makes fantastic notebooks and while you can easily spend $2000 for a machine with dual high end graphics cards, if you go with more pedestrian graphics you can get a really nice 17" laptop with serious resolution and outstanding (read i5 / i7) performance for around $1000.
