Re: VGA, DVI, DVI-D, and HDMI

I've got a laptop that I want to connect to a HD TV. The laptop has a
15-pin VGA port and also a firewire port. The TV has HDMI, RGB, and
composite video ports. The composite video ports are being used by a DVD
player and video game. I do have an adapter that converts VGA to
composite video but it looks pretty bad on the large screen. I have been
considering ways to hook the VGA on the laptop to the HDMI on the TV. I
have found a number of DVI to HDMI cables for sale. I have not found VGA
(male) to DVI (female) adapters for sale in stores but I have found them
online. I have also seen references to DVI-D (as opposed to DVI-A).
Although it looks like I can make the VGA connection to HDMI I'm starting
to wonder if it would work (i.e. trying to push an analog signal into a
digital input. I've typically thought of the firewire as an input to the
PC, not a display output.

Any thoughts if the VGA to HDMI will work? I'm open to other
alternatives. Thanks.
