I agree that too many rules running on the Exchange side can kill performance. However, to me, the obvious solution is for Exchange to push as many rules to Outlook as possible. That could include ActiveX or JavaScript based rules processing for Webmail. The message manipulation would still occur client-side, with updates sent to Exchange during synchronization. Some devices, like my Treo, might not be able to process the rules, but that's a reasonable compromise.

I keep work-related messages like technology newsletters and Midrange.com messages in my work account. I use rules, 50 at the moment, to move those messages and other work-related messages to various folders.

My work-life balance is already skewed by working from home sometimes and having the company laptop available to use for working on problems after hours. Segregating work/tech messages from personal messages improves the balance by letting me focus on personal and social messages when I'm not working. I might still browse those messages after hours, but at least it becomes a conscious choice to do so.

I suppose I could use a separate private account that I only check during work hours, but I don't see why I should have to accommodate the technology instead of having the technology accommodate me.

Walden for the clarification ... the 32K is for RULES. I can see how
they might have limits on size and number of rules, because the rules
have to be processed for every message coming into your mailbox. I
can see a huge rule set having a substantial performance impact.

I get email from all kinds of tech lists, etc. and have it all nicely
going to different folders (or did, I should say...). No complex rules
or anything.

I use GMAIL for these kinds of things, because it is free, and it is
REALLY GOOD at threaded conversations (such as the one we are having).
And for heavens sake, why are you keeping these messages? It is
faster and easier to search the web than to search email.

Now on Exchange a BUNCH of my previously defined rules are a no go
because of this limit. MS has to be kidding !

It is funny how often we hear someone complain about some feature or
limitation which matters only to them, yet to them seems obviously
wrong and egregiously stupid. My suspicion is that your situation (as
in 60 + rules) is *way* outside of the norm.

We have 150 email users, and I would be surprised if there are 60
rules defined in total on the server.

They have some STUPID suggestions like:

1) Rename your rules to shorter names
2) Delete old rules
3) Combine similar rules

These all seem like reasonable workarounds.

Any one else run into this problem ? I have 60 that will work and need
way more then that.

You get WAY too much mail. Simplify.

Or, try ClearContext .. it is an Outlook add-on specifically designed
to help with email overload. I use it and love it. The free version
is good, and the "Pro" version is worth the $90 they charge.
