Best Cost/Quality Desktop system for a college freshman

Hints/ideas from anyone would be helpful, desk space will prob be an issue
(in a dorm) so flat panel/small chassis. Needs network card for connecting
to campus internet. He's got a few games (in the "small" amt of free time
he;ll have from schoolwork) that any current model should handle. rest will
be Internet (FIREFOX!!!), and the usual office suites. Needs DVD/Cd player
asd lot of classwork/text books come with it now. (the DVD's/CD's as
"enhanced" textbooks at only a 50% premium over regular edition.

any thoughts/ideas would be helpful esp those been thru it before.
