AFAIK, Yahoo still charges for POP3 & SMTP access. Web client is free.
gmail (Google) offers Web, POP3, SMTP & IMAP access for free.

POP3 is the more common software client interface. It pulls new email to client's email storage. IMAP accesses remote folders leaving the mail on the server. Your Vista client should work with IMAP. Thunderbird is another option.

I'm currently using IMAP on multiple computers to access the same accounts. It's slower than locally stored email (POP3) and is particularly noticeable on large emails (heavy HTML or attachments), but it's no worse than a web client.

gmail's implementation of IMAP is a bit unique because gmail uses tags instead of folders, but this is not a bad thing. Thunderbird needs some tweaking for gmail IMAP (relocate trash and draft folders). For the same account, I archive with POP3 on one PC, use IMAP and/or Web client on the other PCs.
