I had a d'oh moment after I upgraded
the driver and rebooted and saw the bootup "snow" well before Windows
started loading. But I tend to agree with your assessment that it's the
hardware. You should see the screen at bootup; it reminds me of the Matrix
movies, with the "bits" going up and down in columns. There's an "Access
IBM" button that is used to enter the BIOS, but I can't make out squat once
I get there.

Given my reply earlier this morning, does this change your thoughts? I
would expect the problem would get worse the longer the PC is on, not
better.

Dan:

Instead of overnight, what if you power up after only 30 seconds? ...after 10 minutes? How much time does it take before snow starts to clear under different circumstances?

I.e., capacitance, inductance, thermal expansion/contraction, various things can change over time. What changes, along with both quality and quantity of change, can be checked in different ways. Physical clues go a long way towards narrowing problems down.
