Hi Scott,

Hey, speaking of handling multi-tasking properly, have you heard of Con Kolivas? There's a two-part interview with him here http://apcmag.com/6759/interview_with_con_kolivas_part_1_computing_is_boring and here http://apcmag.com/6762/interview_with_con_kolivas_part_2_his_effort_to_improve_linux_performa wherein he talks about problems with the Linux CPU scheduler and some patches he wrote to fix them. Have you tried them?

I don't know much about Linux, but I've installed DSL on an old PC in order to start learning something in my spare time, which I don't seem to have much of these days...

So run Linux. Or BSD. Or some other free operating system that handles multitasking properly.
Or buy a Mac.

You may not be able to run OS/2, but nothing is forcing you to run Windows. (Well, other than IBM, who seems to want to make absolutely sure that every System i person runs Windows -- but if you don't use this laptop for business, then you'll be just fine without it.)

wish OS/2 would have survived the marketing war...
