Thanks John - that is what I truly expected too, but like I said, I took the
hard drive out of the one problem PC and stuck it in another PC that was
connecting fine and got the SAME error and that surprised me ! I was
planning on just giving them that PC with their hard drive ASAP and figuring
out the problem latter. Much to my surprise the problem moved :-(

Where the heck would something like this be in the software config ?

It sounds like an undetectable error in the internal NIC card. I usually
take a pocket wireless NIC card and attach it, disabling the internal NIC.
If the wireless connects, then it is the internal.
