Don't most VPN's set themselves up as the default route? I'm pretty
sure that MS PPTP does ... every time I use it with the VPN server in
our Canadian office, I end up having to use google.ca instead of google.com.

I believe this is true. I had to have one of my clients configure a
different tunnel for me to use so that only my traffic destined for
their servers went through the vpn - because my web browsing while the
vpn was running was being restricted by their WebSense software.
