Sometimes my Thinkpad gets confused, but I've never had to resort to a
system restore.

Usually, after I've used my undocked laptop and dock it again, I have to go
to the same Settings dialog John pointed you to and click on the '2' box and
check "Extend..." I use the external monitor as my primary, since it is
larger, and the laptop sits to the right. Sometimes, when I redock, it
wants to assume that the external sits to the right of the laptop, which
gets messy when moving the mouse between the two monitors. In that case, I
have to click on the Advanced button in the same dialog to make the switch.
The Advanced dialog's appearance seems heavily dependent upon the video
driver, so what I see is probably not what you'll see on yours, but you may
still see some options that fix your problem.

HTH,
Dan
