XP Home Automatic updates powered off before completion.

Now I can't get the PC to boot in anything but safe mode. Anysuggestions on a way to go on from here?

It was trying to finish installing Service Pack 2, if I understand themessages correctly. Somewhere in the process it obliterated the SystemRestore points so that isn't a choice either, so far as I can tell.
