Is there a Great Divide looming? Is Microsoft going to create a huge, ponderous, but pervasive computing environment where a majority of large firms and small use nothing but Microsoft computing software?
Is there a community of any size developing that, in one way or another, does not have the Microsoft logo on their premises?

Pretty much every platform has a thriving client-side Java community.  You
might want to wander over to SourceForge to check that out.  Just as an
example, let's take, say, the most popular IDE other than (arguably) Visual
Studio.  It's Eclipse!

Not sure what your definition of thriving is, but Java is everywhere, from
mainframes to micro devices.
