I have to second the use of SageTV. Great product with lots of bells and whistles I have yet to try out.

Mark,

Does anybody switched to setting up what to record from TV on their PC?

My preference is Sage TV instead of a DVR as opposed to controlling a DVR.

You not only have a web client available for remote recording setup, but
there is a "placeshifter" client available which gives the full GUI for not
only setting up recordings, but it will transcode and stream either live TV
or recorded shows to you via the internet. You can also setup to
auto-detect and skip commercials during playback using some simple add-ins.
