Same thing happens in Starbucks and many hotels and anywhere else that internet access is on a pay-as-you-go basis. They are not hijacking the browser, they are hijacking the TCP/IP traffic, and sending it through their authentication system. Regarding the the fellow giving internet access away to the whole apartment building ... Robin Hood many have had wonderful motives but he was still a thief.
