I am looking at different network server antivirus programs and the AVG server product looks pretty attractive price wise. Since this thread was close to what I was looking into, has anyone given it a try or have a non-symantec or mcafee recommendation? John, what is your company using for enterprise AV/firewall?McAfee Enterprise for AV and probably shortly for anti-spyware as their AS detection is a snap-in to the AV app. The crappy Windows internal firewall at the moment is sufficing, although I hope to get something a little more industrial in the future.
Haven't I heard that McAfee home products are crap? Even though I could get McAfee or Norton AV F.A.R., I've avoided them like the plague for the past few years. I have the personal experience with Norton AV, but only anecdotal evidence on McAfee. But their enterprise AV product is good, eh? At home I use the free version of Grisoft AVG for AV and nothing for a
firewall, although I'm contemplating the Kerio suite as I already use Sunbelt's CounterSpy anti spyware app.
Of all people, I guess I'm surprised that you don't have a firewall at home. Are you using a router firewall and not any software firewall?
(If anyone can suggest a replacement for Microsoft's Wireless Network Connection app, which is a total POS, please advise.) Subscribe to Brian Livingston's Windows Secrets newsletter: https://windowssecrets.com/info/ . I think he mentioned a tool in a back issue. Normally, you're stuck with Window's built-in app or one that comes with the WiFi card but I think there may be 1 or 2 3rd party tools out there.
I already subscribe, although I'm behind several issues. I'll have to look it up. I wonder if Fred Langa has covered this too. WGA has been known to disable legit XP installs. ????? Oh, wait, that's right. This is Microsoft we're talking about here. <sigh> - Dan ------------------------------ message: 2 date: Thu, 13 Jul 2006 12:49:16 -0500 from: "Jones, John \(US\)" <John.Jones@xxxxxxxxxx> subject: Re: [PCTECH] Symantec corporate AV & Firewall co-existence problems? Haven't I heard that McAfee home products are crap?
Yeah, but we use the Enterprise product. I'm not saying it's perfect, but it does seem better. We also manage updates via McAfee's EPO engine vs. having the PCs autoupdate against McAfee's site all the time.
Of all people, I guess I'm surprised that you don't have a firewall at
home. Are you using a router firewall and not any software firewall? Router firewall. Because I practice relatively safe surfing, I'm not too worried about it. Ditto for my wife for the most part. We also have very little in the way of valuable data on our PCs; my browser cache is probably the most 'dangerous' thing there. I used to run Tiny Personal Firewall 2.x (which is now Kerio) but lost the installer after I had to reload my PC. I know I can still get it but just haven't bothered. I find I use my PCs at home less and less over time. I'm becoming more of a typical user and less of a hobbyist/enthusiast. I think I get my fill at the office and by the time my 8-10 hours are up I don't want to stare at a screen anymore even if it is for entertainment vs. work.
WGA has been known to disable legit XP installs.????? Oh, wait, that's right. This is Microsoft we're talking about
here. <sigh> Yeah. Livingston is calling WGA a marketing program as it's designed to fear/shame people in to buying more copies of Windows than they need (to replace existing legit copies). Today's issue of Windows Secrets, BTW, notes an alternative to Windows Update that ignores WGA. This email is for the use of the intended recipient(s) only. If I'm following this, it sounds like MS is deliberately disabling legit XP installs, as opposed to an overly-ambitious, but well-intentioned, effort. Would MS stoop that low? MS does a lot of sucky things that are probably legal, but I would consider that type of activity to be criminal. - Dan ------------------------------ message: 4 date: Thu, 13 Jul 2006 19:04:22 -0500 from: "Jones, John \(US\)" <John.Jones@xxxxxxxxxx> subject: Re: [PCTECH] Symantec corporate AV & Firewall co-existence problems? Interpret how you will. I personally don't know whether to chalk this up to a marketing effort or simple gross incompetence. Either way, the air in Redmond smells. John A.
