Well I have not yet got a full solution to my missing PC problem - but I can
at least print again which is the point of the whole exercise.

The "solution" was to use Windows "Search for computers" and to specify the
IP of the PC I wanted to connect to. I had used search years ago to resolve
similar problems in mixed W2K and W98 networks, but had no idea you could do
it with the IP address. It does result in an additional printer definition
being created, but I can live with that if it means I can print.

I still have a few more of the suggestions sent to me to try to see if I can
fix this so that names can be used again - but for now this will do the job.

Thanks to all those who offered assistance.
