Ubuntu distro

Things always mess up for me.  I just never get it right.
After hearing others talk of how easy it is to install Ubuntu I downloaded the file, burned the cd, checked that my PC boots first from the CD-ROM drive, and tried it. Nothing. It just launched Windows XP-Pro, fixpack2, as usual.
What stupid thing have I not done? Or done that I shouldn't have done? Any ideas?
