Re: "Missing" downloads

IE always downloads to it's temp files location (Documents and
Settings\username\something) and then copies to the folder where you say
you want it.  Brain-dead behavior if you ask me; why download a 4GB DVD
rip to a 10GB boot partition that has 2GB free when you want the file on
a second, say 400GB, drive?

Firefox downloads to your destination directly and simply downloads to a
different name and renames the file once the d/l is complete.

Check to see if your temp dir or your destination dir lack sufficient
free space to hold the file(s) being downloaded.  For that matter
consider purging the temp internet files as a precaution in case the
cache database has become corrupted.
Check/stress test the connection to the destination drive, especially if
it's on a network or external USB/firewire.  Maybe the connection is
flaky.
CHKDSK the source and destination drives.

Lately when I use IE and click on a download link for an exe, the
download proceeds as normal until it gets into the "tidying up" stage.
It then sits there for a few minutes then the download window disappears
completely.  The normal "Open" and "Open Folder" buttons never get
activated.

The file never makes it into the designated folder.
There is no error message.
No pop-up from Defender or any other blockers.

I cannot find any setting in IE that seems to relate, and in Firefox the
same download works perfectly.  I'd use Firefox all the time but some
sites don't work with IE and if they use JSPs etc. to control the
download there's no URL to copy into Firefox.

Any ideas?
