Yeah, I've gone out to my demarc box when I suspected that something was 
wrong with my house wiring.  And the demarc box has a telco jack on it so 
that I could hook up any old $5 phone from Wal Mart.

Neighbors house had his phone wire dropped in an ice storm some years 
back.  He was about 95 and I felt sorry for him so I took a crappy old 
extension cord with the ends lopped off and electric taped that on the 
service end lying on the ground and the other end to his demarc box.  Over 
a year later he was still mowing around it so I told the phone company to 
come out and fix it.
