I have a ThinkPad, and it has a nifty little program called "IBM
Access Connections" that vastly simplifies managing multiple
connection configurations.  I imagine that other brand laptops have a
similar program.  If your laptop does, you can use that program to
configure a "home" connection configuration that disables the
connection not used.  The wireless is not built in, the wireless card
you have might also have a similar program.

That said, you should also be able to get to the bottom of this by
manually disabling the wireless and wired connections and figuring out
which is really working.

Have fun!  I usually find this kind of stuff a strange combination of
frustrating and intriguing.
