I leave my machines up 24x7 (I participate in the Folding @ Home distributed computing project - see http://folding.stanford.edu ) and schedule the auto-updates and scans to run while I'm asleep. The bizarre thing with AVG is that by default it does it's daily scan, waits a bit, and then searches for updates. One would think it'd do it the other way around - update then scan. Lately, I've added DiskKeeper as another scheduled task to defrag my main workstation every 3 days. Daily was overkill, but enough things change that every 3 days is a decent schedule.
