No particular order... 1. Change the cables. 2. Replace the hub with a switch. 3. Examine the IP settings on the machines involved. Specifically: half vs. full duplex & link speed. While AUTO will work mostly for both duplex and speed, we've observed a number of occasions where setting it to what the hub/switch supports eliminates errors & improves performance. 4. Upgrade the 98 machine to XP. :) 5. Replace the NICs in the machines. If you do this, you may as well get gigabit-capable NICs as decent NICs can be had for under $25 per nowadays. 6. Do 2 & 5 and get a gigabit switch. 2 GbE NICs + 8-port GbE swicth shouldn't cost over $150. You'll likely gain jumbo frame support, which will improve file transfer speed even more.
