Exactly!  I sold electronics in the early 80's and the reason people
originally bought VHS vs. Betamax was that VHS recorders were $100 or more
cheaper.  Later in the product cycle people bought VHS because VHS versions
of movies were much more easily found than Beta versions.

Now the real question is, is this a valid comparison to the differences
between M$ and iSeries?

I think it is a *very* valid comparison between M$ and *GNU/Linux*. If Intel-based GNU/Linux distributions had been available at the same time that Micro$oft was starting up, I doubt that Micro$oft would still be in existence.


In fact Micro$oft is currently trying to protect their existence by threatening Asian governments with patent lawsuits if they use Linux ...
