Dan,

In your original post you had asked about Windows Update. To actually RUN
the update scan(s) (for Windows AND for Office) you have to be using. That
said, you CAN download the updates without using IE by going to the MS
site(s) for those downloads. IE Update just makes a MUCH nicer list of this
stuff...
