Subject: Missing Category in Device Manager

Recently changed OS's from Win98 to XP with a clean install. Partway through
the installation it indicated it could not find the i386 folder. I looked in
browse to find the folder and it did not show the CD or my DVD drives. I
ended up reloading WIN98 and copied the i386 file from DOS into the C drive
and installed from the C drive. In safe mode my machine recognizes the
CD/DVD category in the Device Manager as well as the individual drives in MY
COMPUTER. There is no CD/DVD category in normal mode and does not show
either drive in My Computer.

I have disconnected the drives and reattached and nothing, Used the Add
Hardware Wizard, nothing. Took a working CD from my XP machine downstairs,
nothing. I put the XP disk in the drive and restarted and it would boot
from the disk from the BIOS. I uninstalled the IDE secondary controller and
reinstalled it, nothing. I am starting to run out of alternatives. Any
ideas?
