It boils down to trust. :)

I explicitly trust the other computers in my home ... and I tend to trust the computers at work. Plus, my system is configured to only allow sharing of resources with authorized systems / users.

I use Kerio Personal Firewall (free for personal use) and I've seen in its log the crap that comes through the VPN from systems at work. I have good reason not to trust them. :( (Even though I have all unneeded services turned off, I still prefer to actively block that stuff.)
