I just remembered a setting for Ad-Aware that is off by default. This is the setting to check the HOSTS files. I was the victim of a highjacking attempt that pointed all search engines to another address. Must have clicked a little too fast. Anyway, repeated runs of Ad-Aware did not find it. That's when I finally got Spy-Bot, and it found and fixed the highjack. Then I found that Ad-Aware can also check this but has it turned off when installed. To change it, go to the settings (that "gear" on the GUI) and click on Scanning. Make your changes and Proceed.

and, it's important to note, you have to keep both ad-aware and spy-bot
