It uses the ODBC driver via an SSH connection.

It works perfectly for me - in fact I prefer it to Run SQL Scripts for most stuff.

Is it possible that it was created CCSID 65535?
DSPFFD and look at the columns you're interested in.

I haven't tried to use VS Code for SQL work; if it uses JDBC, the
connector should have a setting for CCSID 65535 which would
effectively let it pretend that the columns are really US English.
