I'll second what Aaron is saying about this. I too had to remove/reinstall
5733OPS due to something getting funky in there somewhere. Using the
LPP/PTF process to install Python is kinda like swatting a fly with a
sledgehammer. It will get the job done but with more effort than is
required. It would be great if these tools and updates were delivered via
apt-get, rpm or some other similar package management tool.

People that use open source tools on a regular basis are used to this level
of simplicity when installing/upgrading the tools. I see this as an
impediment to non-IBM i open source developers embracing the platform.

Yes.

I don't know of any architecture that lets you do that.

We probably need to make sure we're talking about the same things because
some things are very important to have differentiation, and others not
(specifically talking about application development). For example, I
doesn't matter to me whether the BRMS PTFs are differentiated. But it
matters big time that I can have multiple versions of Node.js/Ruby/Python
on my system. Tools like rvm/nvm** were developed for this exact purpose.

You can install PTFs into a temporary location (or install them
temporarily), and then remove them individually if some don't work out.

I need to have both the old and new versions active at the same time so I
can thoroughly test the upgrade/fixes. Again, this is specific for
application development things.

I wanted to speak to my particular situation with 5733OPS difficulties.
I
did a SAVLICPGM/RSTLICPGM to get 5733OPS onto two machines. I was told
this could work but I probably missed a step. Once I installed 5733OPS
from an image catalog everything started working fine. With that said, I
am not a fan of PTFs because it's all or nothing. I need to be able to
install PTFs into a temporary location on the same machine without
disrupting existing work. I need to be able to do this without an IPL.

So are you saying you want to patch the operating system for some users,
or some jobs, but not for others on the same machine? I don't know of any
architecture that lets you do that. Even for applications, that is not
possible except where you can install them in parallel outside the normal
update process. You can install PTFs into a temporary location (or
install
them temporarily), and then remove them individually if some don't work
out. And many PTFs (except the microcode ones) can be installed without
an
IPL.
