Sorry for the delay on this, Github responded with a link on how to
contribute adding syntax highlighting for currently unsupported languages:
https://github.com/github/linguist/blob/master/CONTRIBUTING.md
It says the following up front, which may be a barrier in the short term:
"We try only to add languages once they have some usage on GitHub. In most
cases we prefer that each new file extension be in use *in hundreds of
repositories* before supporting them in Linguist."
But at least we now have the steps on how to do it.
Still checking on Bitbucket, think it relies on CodeMirror.
