Good point about quality and reliability, Gordon. Next time you guys are
driving past a road construction site, take a look at the earthmoving
equipment. Chances are, if the contractor is a big successful guy, the
equipment you'll see says Caterpillar on the side. If the contractor is
struggling, you'll see all kinds of oddball names.
The company my dad ran built more miles of the interstate system than any
other contractor. Except for the minor pieces of equipment, everything was
either Cat for earthmoving or American Hoist for the cranes.

This must be a great month for windows machines.... usually you'll
see one or two... max.
Either way... ignore Root102... they're sneaky. =)
We can argue fanboy stances all day long... but the fact of the matter
is I've yet to see a KISS windows server implementation which manages
to stay running for more than a month at a time.... which is where we
get to the inarguable beauty of the platform: it just works.
There are two ways to get to dependability....
1 iSeries + a handful of capable staff.... or enough Windoz boxen
you'll need a forklift to move 'em all.... a big giant stack of
money..... some shovels and buckets with which to throw your money at
the servers let they become displeased at your lack of expenditure and
die from pure spite... plus a few dozen staff.... plus a handful of
companies to outsource the work your staff can't handle...... plus
lots of downtime.
Yeah, the box is expensive. Yeah, it's hard to learn for alot of new
guys.... (I'm 25 and I love the platform, myself...)
But the fact of the matter is that in all these sports car
comparisons.... people have got it backwards.
The i5 is the Porsche. Just like a Porsche isn't a vehicle you drive
the minute you turn sixteen... the i5 demands the same respect. And
just like the car.... given the proper respect... that i5 will take
you anywhere you want to go. Deny it that respect, and the i5 will
begin craving something crunchy, and good with catsup.... at which
point it will settle on devouring you whole.
It's really that simple.
Now... i5 vs *NIX? That's a different discussion entirely, and one
of which tool will be right for the task at hand.....

Not sure I'll agree... Both will crash, and both can run for years w/out
a reboot. Look at the track record of a _modern_ Windows server and
you'll see it's a rock. Remember, _MODERN_ and _SERVER_!!! I don't care
about what your Windows 2000 server did last century, and I don't care
about your desktop, there is no desktop i5/OS.
