In one case, the IT guy (one guy supporting 500 users) sends out emails with
links to retrieve updates. If somebody screws up his machine, the IT guy can
get to it via VNC. If, after some research, it is discovered that the user
has done something that violates the published IT policy, that user's
department is backcharged for the IT guy's time. This particular company's
owner feels that each department contribute to the bottom line, so IT costs
are charged against each department. Computer equipment is "rented" from the
IT department in much the same way bulldozers and trucks are "rented" from
the equipment department. As a result, the users are careful about what they
do.
Most of my other clients operate in much the same way.
